They see disaster ahead.
The economy: Calamitous. Obama: A catastrophe.
Members of this group, about one in five Americans, could hardly be more pessimistic. Two-thirds say the economy is poor now, and a minuscule 6% see a recovery likely in the next two years. They give Obama the lowest ratings of any group on handling terrorism and foreign affairs. His overall rating is 21%.
They are inclined to see moral values as the most important characteristic in a president, and only 14% say Obama "shares their values."
That's not to say these are loyal Republicans. They are more likely to list themselves as political independents than as members of either major political party — the sort of disaffected voters who have helped fuel the anti-tax, anti-government Tea Party movement. They include the lowest percentage of college graduates of any group.
Trisha Vukodinovich, 41, of North Prairie, Wis., west of Milwaukee, doesn't mince words. Obama "is doing horribly," she says. "He has no control of that ridiculous Congress. They're spending money like there's no tomorrow, and he is pretty lackadaisical about our security, too."
Asked if she approved of Obama on any front, she says he is "a really, really good speech-giver" but adds: "I'm not impressed."
The faltering economy has been hard on the small business she and her mother run — it digs wells and pump systems. She worries that Obama and congressional Democrats will raise taxes. Then there's the health-care overhaul that would require employers to provide health coverage for their workers or pay a fee, though the smallest businesses would be exempt.
"This health care (bill) is just a freight-train wreck waiting to happen," she says. "Eventually they'll run out of people to tax and money to give away."
