Michael Fedor says the president "has been thoughtful and intelligent" about the issues facing the nation.

1. Sunny side up GROUP PROFILE
33% of the sample

Obama approval rating: 71%

Economic outlook: 90% say recovery will begin within two years

A president's most important characteristic: Positions on issues, moral values

Who they are: 51% men, 49% women. 38% have college or postgraduate degrees, the highest percentage of any group.

------------------------------------------------

The biggest group is the most optimistic one.

One-third of Americans fall into this category, giving Obama a muscular 71% approval rating and rating the economy even more positively. Nine of 10 predict the economy will begin to recover in two years or less. In fact, most say the economic turnaround already has begun.

"I think the economy has stabilized," says Michael Fedor, 27, of Cambridge, Mass. He was among those surveyed and falls into this group. "The good news is the loss of jobs has leveled off and consumers are tired of savings, and they're going to start spending a little bit. That's going to spur investment by companies."

He foresees a "gradual climb" for the economy. Obama "has been thoughtful and intelligent about the way he approaches these issues," Fedor says. "But they're complicated issues and it's going to take time to work out."

This group includes an almost equal number of men and women and the most diverse mix of any on ideology. There are a fair number of conservatives, moderates and liberals. It's the most highly educated group; nearly four in 10 have college or postgraduate degrees. They see limits to a president's power; just one in four think a president's policies can do a lot to affect the economy.

Fedor, who had been a business strategist, enrolled in graduate school before the economy's meltdown and now expects to get his MBA from Harvard in May. A positive outlook doesn't mean getting a job is easy, though. "It has been difficult looking for job openings in my industry, venture capital," he says. "There's not nearly as many firms hiring these days as there were in 2007."

Dawn Morgan-Moore, of Glenside, Pa., says, "I do know people who are unemployed and recently unemployed. I think it’s going to be some time before it does get better."

2. Right man for hard times GROUP PROFILE
18% of the sample

Obama approval rating: 82%

Economic outlook: 39% say recovery will begin within two years

A president's most important characteristic: Ability to manage the government

Who they are: 40% men, 60% women. The highest percentages of African Americans and Hispanics. 79% are Democrats or Democratic leaners ------------------------------------------------

They are Obama's biggest fans.

Nearly one in five Americans fall into the second group. They give Obama high ratings on all five specific issue areas — 82% approve of the overall job he's doing as president — even though most of them don't think the economy will even begin to recover in the next two years.

One reason for their approval: Eight of 10 say the country is facing unprecedented challenges, and they see Obama as the right leader to address hard times. They feel in sync with the president: 100% say he "shares their values"; 93% say he "cares about the needs of people like me"; 90% say he understands the problems Americans face in their daily lives.

Many of them are the sort of voters on whom Democrats typically rely. It includes the highest percentages of women, liberals, blacks and Hispanics, and the lowest percentage of high-income households. It also has the lowest average age.

"He's making a valiant effort ... and I want to believe that we're getting better," says Dawn Morgan-Moore, 48, a civilian program analyst for the Navy who lives in Glenside, in suburban Philadelphia. "But I do know people who are unemployed and recently unemployed. I think it's going to be some time before it does get better."

In the end, she fears that a turnaround may not arrive until after Obama's four-year term is over, but she says he shouldn't be blamed for that. "Having the first African-American president come in and be confronted with the war, with the economy," she says with clear dismay. "A lot of presidents before him didn't have all those issues."
