Obama makes fundraising trip to Texas
HOUSTON, July 17 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama headed to the southern state of Texas on Tuesday for fundraising events that aim to rake in multi-million dollars in donation for his reelection campaign.
The one-day trip was expected to raise more than 4 million U.S. dollars -- a sum that surpasses his previous single-day Texas record -- through four events, two each in San Antonio and Austin.
Obama laid out his many differences with Republican rival Mitt Romney in San Antonio, and announced that Texas will be a battleground state soon.
Referring to TV ads being run by Romney and his Republican allies, Obama said: "The next four months, you guys won't see them, because you're not considered one of the battleground states, although that's going to be changing soon."
Republican-dominated Texas has been surprisingly rewarding for the Obama fundraising machine. The president has raised 15.7 million dollars in the state this cycle, trailing only California, New York, Illinois and Florida, according to media reports. Romney, by comparison, has raised 24 million from Texas.
Obama's campaign aides say they will have to tighten the fundraising race with Romney to win the November elections. Last month, Romney outraised Obama 106 million U.S. dollars to 71 million.
